The mission of the office of Chronic Disease Prevention is to promote healthy and safe behaviors for all individuals and their communities. We plan local programs for the prevention of chronic illnesses, as well as for unintentional and intentional injuries. We care about the health of Pinellas County residents and visitors and we are dedicated to helping people live longer, healthier and happier! Chronic diseases account for 70% of all deaths and 75% of the medical costs in our nation, but many chronic diseases are preventable with a few simple lifestyle changes!
In carrying out our mission, the office works with community partners to:
- Plan, direct and conduct programs directed toward the prevention and control of chronic diseases, promoting healthy behaviors and practices in the areas of obesity, diabetes, asthma, physical activity, nutrition, and tobacco cessation;
- Provide leadership in the development and dissemination of effective health promotion, school health education, and risk reduction programs;
- Work with collaborative partners for environment and public policy changes that will lead to a safe, attractive, “walkable” community;
- Gather information for monitoring of chronic diseases and conditions, and behavioral and other risk factors at county level including tobacco use, nutrition, and exercise;
- Provide training, educational and activity programs for selected chronic disease and health promotion activities;
- Provide technical assistance to our partners in the development and implementation of programs related to chronic disease prevention and control, health promotion and school health education;
- Provide injury and violence prevention training and education to health department staff and the public;
